Comedy Show and Post-Show Talk by O,1,2nine
The week after the Symposium Commemorating the Publication of “Takayuki Toshima Selected Works,” kindly hosted at Former Shimizuya Dry Cleaning (now Suisei) in Nakano, came this show by O,1,2nine, and then an after-talk joined by Nike Tobita.
With the preparations for the symposium and the nerves, my head was barely working, but we decided, hey, why not just perform our best sketches so far + do a little new material—and somehow it worked out; in fact, I think it was better that way. The sketches also made use of things like a single long udon noodle—ippon udon, a whole bowl of udon in one strand—handed down in Sanuki (the old name of Kagawa Prefecture, famous for its udon), handprints left in the asphalt, and the scars in the floor peculiar to a dry cleaner's. In the after-talk, starting from Nike Tobita's questions, we seem to be talking about something or other: sketch comedy and community, manzai (two-person stand-up) and sketch comedy, the cutting and conversion of time and space. Still, seeing my own face in photos is a real downer—or so Toshima reportedly thought this time, looking at the photos to make this website. Also, I've decided, all on my own, that “Single Bed,” which Toshima sings during the performance, was probably the highlight of this show.
“When making a work, it's not that there is no logic; it's that the logic is forgotten.”
