As an actor with the theatre company Whales, led by Eijiro Takahashi, Toshima took part in its productions (playing Amemura Ken in the Masterpiece Detective Amemura Ken series). Being cast in the lead role right from the start came out of the blue, and since it was also Toshima's first time appearing as an actor in “theatre,” as opposed to sketch comedy or performance, it became a valuable experience.

The series began with Masterpiece Detective Amemura Ken episode1 in 2015, and in 2018 there was also a production co-directed with Kenobi, led by Yoshiro Hatori. That production was held as part of “Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama 2018” (TPAM) as well.

The script is written by Eijiro Takahashi, and it makes for a kind of theatre you rarely come across, full of laughs and a sci-fi feel revolving around paintings, the analysis of paintings, and space and time. The story of episode1 concerns a woman who runs a bakery and has had her bread stolen—bread she was sure she had baked—and a detective who has come by time machine to pursue the case. A sci-fi painting-criticism mystery that talks about various paintings that seem to bear traces of the culprit while, at the same time, spinning out deductions from them.
