A recitation work consisting of 21 texts written on the basis of the rakugo story “Atama-yama.” Following the method of 23 Variations for Texts on Invention, the work unfolds across its texts through cycles of repetition, subtle shifts, and leaps. Here, the focus is not just on “invention” in the sense of a new creation or an idea, but more specifically on the form of the variation in Western music.

A variation is a musical form in which the original piece is also performed as one of the pieces within the set of variations. The source story, “Atama-yama,” is used in the same way here. To say a little more, “Atama-yama” is a self-referential story about someone jumping into a pond that has formed on their own head. As a story within the text, it also incorporates the position of the “author who recites” into its own self-referentiality.

All this may still not make much sense, but the author believes that reading the work itself should make things clear.
