If I Go On Like This...
If I Go On Like This...

The work consists of panels (frames) divided and arranged discontinuously, a text split into two parts, and ten small, business-card-sized pieces of paper, each printed with a short sentence.
One could describe this work as a development of the problematique explored in the 2010 work Burororororo: the continuity and discontinuity of time and space between panels and text in manga.
At the time, Toshima apparently thought it would be good if the individual panels and texts resonated with one another around the themes of “disappearance, negation, and absence.”

The backgrounds of the ten business-card-sized pieces of paper form a continuous progression from black through gray to white. The text is printed in white. As the background changes from dark gray to lighter gray and then to white, the white lettering becomes progressively harder to read.

The aim was to let viewers experience the themes mentioned above visually in the very process of reading and looking at the work.
